Together since June 2010, Between Monsters may be relatively new to the Cedar Rapids music scene as a group, but Kelli Pence, Layne Goldsberry, Daren Barker and Jeff Nelson have all been rocking individually for years. Hoopla sat down with lead vocalist Kelli Pence to learn more.
How did you come up with your band name?
A couple of the guys were going through some rough stuff, but the band is an escape, the place “between” their “monsters.” That’s kind of heavy, so we have pivoted it to being about how our short lead singer is between the monster rockers on stage.
What kind of a show do you put on?
We play covers of new rock, classic rock, alternative rock, country rock — mostly 90s and now, but some unusual nuggets thrown in the mix. So far we have a great mix, but we try to add songs every month or so to keep things fresh and interesting. We interact with the crowd, we bounce around, we switch instruments, the guys sometimes wear wigs, Kelli dons a pimp hat when she is “pimpin’ the band” as she announces upcoming events. All fun stuff!
Any interesting stories during performances?
Kelli seems to always get someone who will stand directly opposite of her microphone, and mouth the words to the song she is singing. But what is even more strange, is that most of the time it is apparent that the person doesn’t know the lyrics to the song. It’s like watching a dubbed over kung fu movie.
